Northern Arizona Blues Alliance's (NAZBA) mission is to promote, teach, and advance Blues, through networking with fans and musicians, entertainment venues, promoters, and music organizations and the community at large throughout the Sedona-Cottonwood, Verde Valley, Flagstaff, and Prescott areas. In addition to special events such as “harmonic blowouts”, “guitar shootouts” and just having plain fun, the organization is a 501 c(3) registered non-profit and an affiliate of the Blues Foundation. Our affiliation with the Blues Foundation enables the organization to host a local International Blues Competition (IBC), where the winner goes to Memphis to compete against the best bands in the country. NAZBA also is permitted to send local CD for consideration in the "Best Self-Produced CD" competition. Locally, the organization plans to host smaller, single-day events, featuring touring national acts, coupled with local talent.

It’s hard to imagine music more influential in American society than Blues. Originating from the cotton fields of the Deep South, finding its way up the Mississippi, through Memphis and St. Louis, all the way to Chicago and spreading out over the plains through Texas and Kansas, Blues has had a profound impact on American Music. Some of the early pioneers included Charlie Patton, Robert Johnson, Blind Lemon Jefferson, Big Bill Broonszy, Ma Rainey, Willie Dixon, and Bessie Smith, laying the foundation from which was built modern Rock and Roll, with influences on both jazz and country western music.

In the formative years of Rock and Roll, we can hear the influences of Blues in legendary Rock bands such as The Beatles, Led Zeplin, The Rolling Stones, Eric Clapton, The Allman Brothers, Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin, and countless other bands of the 60’s and 70’s. These bands were influenced by the likes of Muddy Waters, Howlin Wolf, James Cotton, Albert King, , Etta James, Billie Holiday, B. B. King and many others, who took the foundation laid before them and crafted the artform for a more modern appetite, taking the music to another level.

In the 80’s and 90’s we celebrated Blues with great performances from Stevie Ray Vaughn, Bernard Allison, Lynyrd Skynyrd, ZZ Top, Eric Clapton, Koko Taylor, Bonnie Raitt, and even Queen!

As we fast forward today, Blues consists of a combination of artform adoration, with new kings and queens appropriately crowned. Morphing from the fields of the Deep South to the bright lights of London's Royal Albert Hall, it is this unbroken tradition of honoring the past, living and loving the present, and building upon the foundation for the future, the Northern Arizona Blues Alliance wishes to preserve for all to enjoy.
